Feldman Architecture's projects, both rural and urban, incorporate state-of-the-art techniques for minimizing impacts on the natural environment. Visitors and readers of design publications may first appreciate their beauty but, digging deeper, later discover their forward-thinking building technologies and ecological agendas. FA took on the AIA 2030 challenge in 2016, committing to incrementally reducing the carbon footprint of projects until, by 2030, all new buildings will be zero carbon. Upon the recent release of the 2023 The AIA By the Numbers report detailing the impact of the AIA 2030 Commitment, Feldman Architecture was one of the 31 signatories nationally who reported 80% pEUI reduction target across their entire portfolio. On the embodied carbon side, Feldman Architecture established an office-wide embodied carbon budget for each new project (50 metric tons), which was implemented across all new projects at the end of 2022. As of 2024, 100% of new construction projects established a Carbon Budget, which, when combined with carbon offsets, targets net zero embodied carbon. FA has identified the Living Futures Institute’s Living Building Challenge as a framework for raising performance goals and accountability to the next level. This involves a paradigm shift from merely minimizing the negative impacts of projects to creating buildings that exist in balance with their ecosystems and are fundamentally restorative. Currently, Feldman Architecture has three projects that are pursuing different levels of LBL certification, including one project that is on track to receive Zero Carbon Certification.
After the devastating fires that displaced thousands in Altadena and the Pacific Palisades in January of 2025, the team at Feldman Architecture, alongside Blend Projects, felt moved to craft a design solution that directly responded to the place and the need. Complementing the Blend system with our detailed oriented design process inspired a partnership and a shared vision to provide a cost efficient, regenerative, and resilient design concept - fab_01 was created. Our proposed design sensitively responds to LA’s unique culture and geography and is envisioned as a one-story design concept tailored to a typical Altadena lot size. fab_01 is a resilient, energy efficient, single-family home that will be built to Passive House requirements. With four recently Certified Passive House Designers in house, we submitted the project to the Passive House Network California Rebuilds Design Competition Awards and received second place in the Contemporary category, where fab_01 was applauded for its fluid design and layout!
